Obituary for Arleen E. (Blome) Hindman

Arleen (Blome) Hindman, 94, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2020 at the Hubbard Care Center after a short stay. Arleen Elsie (Blome) Hindman was born the oldest of four children to Clarence and Jennie (Ott) Blome on November 3, 1925 at home on a farm north of Hubbard. Within the next 2 years, they moved one mile south of Hubbard where she was raised. She was baptized on January 10, 1926 at the Zion Evangelical Church in Hubbard, now known as Zion United Church of Christ, where she remained a member until her passing. She was confirmed April 9, 1939 in the same church.
While growing up she was a hard worker, detasseling corn, walking beans, feeding thrashers, milking cows, chicken chores, and helped with the family like all families did in those days. She attended Grant School No. 3 until she went to public school in Hubbard starting 8th grade and graduated in 1943. In her junior and senior year, she helped out local families in the area. Some of them being Jane Faust, Juanita Faust, Betty Lettow and Alice Boeke for $2.50 a day. After graduating she worked at Stub Larson's Cafe on the south side of main street as a waitress where she met her future husband, Jerry Hindman. They were married on one of the coldest days of the year, February 14, 1948, at Zion Church in Hubbard. They lived on a farm in the area where they raised their four children, Jean, Larry, Kathy and Janet. In 1984 they retired to town where they remained.
Arleen was a life-long active member in church as a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir and was on funeral committees. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #4 for 69 years. She loved working in her garden, while able, and had beautiful flowers to this day. Her love of African violets and house plants showed in her home. She was an amazing cook and baker. She entered a few county contests with her yummy apple pies and was well known at YF dinners for her black bottom pie. She was active over the years in the Double Six Club, local bridge and 500 clubs.
Arleen also enjoyed watching sports. She attended many school and sporting events her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were involved in and loved hearing about each and every one of them. She loved to follow the Cyclones, Chicago Cubs, and the University of Illinois Softball team spending many hours following them all on TV, radio or in the papers.
Arleen was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family was so important to her always wanting to know what was going on in their lives. She will be dearly missed by all of them.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are four children, Jean (David) Winter of Hubbard, Larry (Deb) Hindman of Radcliffe, Kathy (Dave) Tisdale of Zearing and Janet (Mick) Coellner of Hubbard; her grandchildren Tricia Winter Knappenberger (Todd) of Olathe, KS, Tonya Winter Sickels (Chris) of Indianola, Kyle Winter (Liz) of Jesup, Chelcee Hindman of Ames, Traye Hindman (Megan) of Hubbard, Beau Hindman (Jennifer) of Radcliffe, Kala Tisdale White (Nathan) of State Center, Clint Tisdale (Sarah), of Altoona, Tom Eilbeck (Brandy)of Hubbard, Joe Eilbeck (Ashley) of State Center, Sarah Eilbeck Patten (Tim) of Grundy Center, Karla Coellner Bergthold (John) of Liberty, MO, Jenna Coellner Wanninger (Luke) of Granger, Natalie Coellner of Des Moines; her great-grandchildren Bret and Emma Knappenberger, Sydney and Rayna Sickels, Kylie and Landon Winter, Kollin and Kaleb White, Addilee and Joelle Tisdale, Wrigley, Reed and Ryder Eilbeck, Ellie and Easton Eilbeck, Bowie Patten, Beau Jr. Hindman and Fenton Hindman, Lucy and Ruby Wanninger; brother Harold (Erma) Blome; sister Doris Ritland; sister-in-law Jerris Blome; brother-in-law Dale Gardner; and many nieces and nephews and friends.
