Obituary for Cecil Sam Tesdahl

Cecil Tesdahl, age 92, of Radcliffe, IA, died June 13, 2019 at the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard.
Cecil (Sam) Stanley Tesdahl was born May 23, 1927, at Radcliffe, Iowa, in the farm home of his parents, Carl and Evelyn Logan Tesdahl. He was baptized by Rev. S. O. Heidal and confirmed by Rev. H. N. Bakke in the rural Zion Lutheran Church.
On August 20, 1949, he married Jean Brinkmeyer in the Zion Evangelical & Reformed Church in Hubbard. Four daughters were born to this union. They farmed 41 years in the Hubbard-Radcliffe area and remained on the farm until 1994, when they moved to Radcliffe.
Cecil attended Sunnyside Country School in Scott Township, graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1944, and attended Central College in Pella. During World War II in the spring of 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 17 years old and served honorably until the fall of 1946. He remained a member of the American Legion throughout his life.
As a young man, Cecil enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping. He worked as a hired hand and also worked at the canning factory in Roland and the turkey plant in Ellsworth. Music and horses were always an important part of his life, and in his later years, he enjoyed golfing. He started singing in church when he was 2 ½ years old and continued singing with his family at home and at church throughout his life. He enjoyed singing with many groups, including the Navy Choir, the Radcliffe Men’s Chorus, the Barbershop Chorus in Iowa Falls, several quartets in Radcliffe, and sang with a quartet in Hubbard for more than 50 years. Until moving off the farm, Cecil always had horses. He trained and showed them, judged horse shows, and enjoyed trail rides with friends and the saddle clubs he belonged to.
Cecil was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, and most recently of Salem Lutheran Church, where he enjoyed Bible Study, sharing his love of music, and friendship with those young and old. His faith grew deeper and more important to him as he grew older.
In 2011 Cecil lost the love of his life after 62 years of marriage. In the years that followed, he drew strength from his church, friends and his morning coffee group. For the past few years, he has resided at the Hubbard Care Center, where he enjoyed and appreciated those who cared for him. He especially enjoyed attending and participating in the music there and sharing the assurance and faith he had in his God.
On June 13 Cecil left his earthly home peacefully, ready and eager for his heavenly home.
Cecil is survived by his four daughters, Carole (Dwain) Thomas of Coatesville, PA, Ann Hay of Marshalltown, IA, Beth Busacca of Woodinville, WA, Sandra (Blake) Davis of Charlotte, NC, three grandsons, five granddaughters, eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three sisters (Judith & husband Leonard Osmundson, Charlotte & husband Maynard Hodnefield, Helen & husband Edward Lindebak), one brother (Harold & wife Vivian Tesdahl), three nieces and two nephews.
