Obituary for Evalyn E. Mathews

Evalyn Mathews, age 100, of Hubbard, IA, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at Hubbard Care Center.
Evalyn Elizabeth (Broer) Mathews was born on April 18,1919, in the home of her parents, Louie and Mabel (Otto) Broer near Sherman. She joined older brother, Wilmer, and the family was later completed with the addition of Gertrude (Dougan) and Verlin and Clara, both of whom died as infants. Evalyn attended Evergreen Country School and graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1936. She became a schoolteacher at Grant #4 Country School after completing Normal Training.
She eloped with Oscar (Pat) Mathews in Bethany, MO on August 27, 1938, which ended her career as a schoolteacher. They lived in Radcliffe, New Providence and Hubbard and became parents to eight children. As if that wasn't a big enough job, Evalyn helped farm and also worked cleaning houses, sorting corn, walking beans, as a nurse's aide at the Eldora Hospital and as a house mother at the State Training School. She received the Governor's Volunteer Award from Governor Branstad in the 1980's. She and Pat also opened their home to many foster sons.
Evalyn was never idle. She sewed for her children and enjoyed quilting, embroidery work and crocheting. Her family has enjoyed and benefited from her handiwork. She was a lifelong member of St John Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of Mission Circle. Having her children attend Sunday School, Bible School and church was a priority for her and she remained an active member until dementia robbed her of the ability to do so.
Evalyn will be remembered for being a wonderful cook by her family and friends. It was not unusual for there to be guests at family meals. She loved cooking and there was always room for 'one more'. If you stopped by the coffee pot was always on along with something freshly baked to enjoy.
Education was another priority for Evalyn, and she was very proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their many accomplishments. She passed on her love of reading to all of them and some of her great-granddaughters spent time reading to Grandma Evalyn the evening before she passed.
Evalyn has been reunited with her husband, Pat; son, Lyle; grandson, Andy Prins and sons-in-law Cal Prins and Carl Teig, as well as, her siblings, in-laws and many friends.
Survivors include her children Barbara Teig, Milford, IL; Sandra (Bob Browning) Prins, Peoria, AZ; Patricia (Geoff) Jessen, Woodbury, MN; Rebecca (Rollie) Halverson, Austin, MN; Roger (Barb) Mathews, Marshalltown, IA; Rhonda (Jeff) Roberts, Hubbard, IA; Julie (Steven) Boeke, Waterloo, IA; daughter-in-law Susan Mathews, Norfolk, VA; sixteen grandchildren; seventeen and a half great-grandchildren; foster son Bob Carel of the Quad-Cities; and many nieces and nephews.
