Obituary for Genevieve Fleming

Genevieve Fleming, age 101, formerly of Radcliffe, IA, passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2019, at the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard, IA.
All of our lives are a journey with a beginning and a destination. Genevieve “Gen” Lucille (Ritland) Coburn Fleming began her journey on May 26, 1918, on a farm six miles south of Radcliffe, Iowa. She was the youngest of Olaus and Osa (Lee) Ritland’s ten children. Gen was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church just two miles from their home farm; a church her parents helped establish in 1882. Gen remained a faithful and active member of Zion all of her life. It is fitting that her life’s journey will be celebrated for the final time at Zion in rural Radcliffe.
Gen graduated from Radcliffe High School in May 1936 and from the Kennedy School of Beauty in Des Moines in 1939. While working in Des Moines she met Arley Coburn.
On August 31, 1940, Genevieve was united in marriage to Arley Quentin Coburn at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa. To this union three sons were born; Leland Allen, Bruce Franklin and Delmar Eugene. During the first few years of their marriage, Arley and Gen helped manage the Coburn Grocery Store in Decatur, Illinois. In 1944, during World War II, Arley was called to serve in the US Navy.
In 1951 they left Decatur and moved back to rural Radcliffe to start farming. Arley passed away suddenly at the age of 40 on March 3, 1960. Following his death, Gen opened a beauty shop in her home to help support her boys. With Gen’s perseverance and with help from her sons, she was able to keep the farm operation running and eventually purchased the homestead that had been started by her father in 1888. This farm is part of the legacy she left her children. It’s still owned and farmed by her family today.
On January 6, 1968, Genevieve married Birch C. Fleming at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They spent the next 41 years enjoying life: bowling, dancing, gardening, cooking, and traveling - including spending nine winters in Prescott Valley, AZ, and traveling to Luxembourg to visit her brother Ernie’s WWII grave. They thoroughly enjoyed spoiling their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Birch passed away in 2009.
Genevieve demonstrated her love for her Savior in everything she did for her family, friends, church and community. She instilled in her family a strong sense of honor, integrity and faith in our Lord. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at the Hubbard Care Center on August 10, 2019 at the age of 101. She will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents Olaus and Osa Ritland, husbands Arley Coburn and Birch Fleming; brothers Joseph, Oscar, Howard, Earnest, and Lester; and sisters Ida, Hazel, Pearl and Ethel.
Gen is lovingly remembered by her sons Leland (Karen) Coburn and Bruce (Phyllis) Coburn of Radcliffe, and Delmar (Pam) Coburn of Fond du Lac, WI; two step-sons - Ronald (Vickie Lee) Fleming of Apple Valley, MN and Brian (Kathy) Fleming of Lincoln, NE; two step-daughters - Sharon (Tim) Bahr of Hawkeye, IA and Nancy (Terry) Voigt of Roseville, MN ; six grandchildren - Angie (Kent) Weaver of San Clemente, CA, Kara (Mike) Schacherer of St. Louis Park, MN, Sara (Jason) Martin of Hubbard, IA, Bryce (Katy) Coburn of Radcliffe, IA, Joshua (Kelly) Coburn of Oregon, Wi, Hannah Coburn of Milwaukee, WI; seven step-grandchildren - Amy (Seth) Thorson of Forest City, IA, Alex Bahr Fairmont, IA, Eric (Jessica) Fleming of Lincoln, NE, Emily (Aaron) Louchart of Kanas City, MO, Chandra (Darryl) Bushard of Farmington, MN, Colin (Jacky) Voigt of Eagan, MN and Colby (Kelly) Voigt of Vadnais Heights, MN, fourteen great-grandchildren, nine step great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
