Obituary for Larry Dean Larson

Larry Larson, age 59, passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, at his residence in Buckeye, IA.

Larry Dean Larson was born on January 25, 1960 in Iowa City, Iowa, to Leo and Ruth Larson. He grew up in Buckeye, Iowa.

Larry graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1979 and attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls for a short time.

He enjoyed racing (his own car) and karaoke. He collected football jerseys, racing shirts and race cars. Larry was an avid WWE Wrestling and Eagles fan.

Where do I start. Larry Larson was a great person. He had a heart of gold, but everyone knew his beard of white. The only thing whiter that that was the line you had to walk to the right of at Super Nationals. I met Larry in the early 1990’s. He volunteered his time at the local go kart track on Sunday’s working turn number 3.

We would then head the the Greenbelt Speedway after that, he would go mingle the pits and talk to everyone while I worked a turn or staging. Larry would ride along many times to the races with myself and my Dad. Heck, there was one night when I was 13 I don’t remember much of the after races from the Wright Co Speedway, but he made sure I made it home and then asked me the next night “how does your head feel?”

Larry loved to sing, many Thursday nights you could hear him sing karaoke at the Swamp in Alden, Ia. He had his favorites to sing, and we all knew he was gonna make sure we heard them. The song Larry loved to sing the most was the National Anthem. He sang it many times for me at tracks I announced, and many more we visited.

Larry loved the races and loved the people. He would always wait in victory lane when his “favorite” drivers won. After they took all their pictures, Larry would ask for the checkered flag and get that one last picture. He always had a smile on his face bigger than the track itself. He had a special way of handing the flag back to the Flagman, like presenting it as a golden staff that should be treasured. This I know, because he handed many back to me.

Larry will be missed by many in the racing world. I was asked to make a post to share with the racing community, I wasn’t sure what I would say, but I just wanted everyone to know how great of a person he was and that he enjoyed every night he could be with his racing family.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his mother, Ruth Larson of Buckeye, Iowa; his 3 sisters Cindy (Larry) Klaffke, Barb (Donnie) Hanna of Buckeye, Iowa and Sharon Carpenter of Iowa Falls, Iowa; his daughter Kayla Matteson and two granddaughters, Aurora and Leia of Humboldt, Tennessee; two nieces and six nephews; ten great-nieces; six great-nephews; along with other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Leo Larson, a brother in infancy and his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Thank you to the Iowa Falls Mary Greeley Dialysis for all they have done for Larry.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests to have a memorial sent to them in his honor.

Please, share a memory of Larry in the comments. Share this post and keep Larry’s white lines white forever. I will miss you friend, enjoy the racing in heaven, and we will see you later.
