Obituary for Anna "Ann" Mae Steelman

Anna "Ann" Steelman, age 99, of Ames, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2020 at Accura Healthcare of Ames.

Anna “Ann” Mae (Robertson) Steelman was born 27 October 1920 in Hubbard, Iowa to John Henry and Myrtle Maude (Hildebrand) Robertson. Mom wanted to live to be 100 but the good Lord saw that she was getting tired and called her to her heavenly home on 30 January 2020.

Ann graduated from Hubbard High school in 1938. In the summer of 1938 she attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and could then teach in Iowa’s country schools.

While in high school she saw a cute freshman boy, Claire Steelman. Ann and Claire eloped 11 November 1939 to Bethany, Missouri and enjoyed 80 years together. They started their married life in Hubbard and eventually moved to a farm north of Colo, Iowa where they raised their family. Their life was an adventure that included raising five children, traveling, good friends, hosting family dinners and an exchange student from Finland.

Ann loved to be in the kitchen preparing meals from her large garden, baking cakes, cookies and breads. Her garden was large but her strawberry bed was larger! Ann and Claire raised or grew most of the food for the family. The coffee pot was always on and homemade treats were ready for guests. She learned to sew at a young age and sewed clothes for herself and her daughters. After she married she learned to quilt from her mother-in-law Tressa (Chance) Steelman. Each of her children and grandsons went to bed under a quilt handmade by Ann. As a child Ann also learned to play the piano. She sang in the church choir. Ann was always active in her church, be it in Hubbard, Colo and later Ames. Ann and Claire retired from the farm in 1985 and moved to Ames to be closer to family.

Ann and Claire enjoyed retirement and watching their grandsons before and after school. Derek and Brett reaped the benefits of homemade treats after school (and the occasional plate of candy) and letting Grandma know they were ready for breakfast. When the boys were in high school, Ann would say you’re coming for lunch – it was not a question and they knew they could bring a friend as there was always room for one more at the table. Ann loved to spoil her family.

Ann loved to travel and in her later years go for a drive. She enjoyed the daily van rides to look at the geese near her home at Ada Hayden Park which she called her goose run.

Ann is survived by her husband, Claire, and five children, Joyce Churchill, Doug (Joyce) Steelman, Roger (Nancy) Steelman, Marti Steelman and Patti Steelman. Grandchildren Jodi (Tom) Keating, Lori Churchill, Lisa Churchill Palmer, Jennifer (Jay) Bullock, Michelle Steelman, Derek (Abby) Steelman, and Brett Steelman. Great grandchildren Kevin (Brittany) Keating, Tim Keating, Ryan Keating, Ben Reeves, Curt Reeves, Kaley Churchill Palmer, Katherine Palmer, Wiley Steelman, Vanessa Steelman and Emerson Steelman. Great great-granddaughter Nova Grace Palmer.

Ann was predeceased by her parents, daughter Kim Janiece and siblings, Howard, Leo, Charley, Cecil, Ona and William.

Burial will be next to her daughter and parents in the Hubbard Cemetery at Hubbard, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Claire at 2907 Northwood Drive, Ames, Iowa 50010. Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard has been entrusted with her care.

We thank the Lord and give praise for the amazing life of Anna “Ann” Mae Steelman.
