Obituary for Margaret Gelhaus

Margaret Gelhaus passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 30, at the Hubbard Care Center as her family sang “Jesus Loves Me.” The Lord blessed her with a life of 92 years.
Margaret Emma Zahnd, the daughter of Chris and Martha (Luthi) Zahnd was born March 2, 1927, in Marshalltown, Iowa. She received her Christian faith through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism as an infant at St. John’s Evangelical Church in Melbourne, Iowa. It was at this church that she later professed her faith through the Rite of Confirmation. Margaret attended public school in St. Anthony, Iowa, where she graduated with the class of 1944. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and following her education began teaching elementary grades in Hubbard.
It was while working at the ticket window of a Hubbard basketball game that she met Gilbert Gelhaus. They were united in marriage on June 11, 1948, at St. John’s Church in Melbourne. The couple made their home on the family farm south of Hubbard where they enjoyed farming together. Margaret also cared for a large garden and spent many hours canning and freezing vegetables from the garden and fruit from her fruit trees. They retired to Hubbard when their two sons took over the farming operations. One of their favorite things about retirement was spending several winter months each year in Arizona. As the health of Gilbert and Margaret declined, they resided in assisted living and later moved to the Hubbard Care Center.
Margaret loved to do counted-cross-stitch making pictures, blankets and seasonal gifts for her family. Reading and word puzzles also occupied her spare time. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard where she taught Sunday School and served many years as the chairperson of the funeral committee. Her greatest love was being a mother and grandmother.
Margaret is lovingly remembered by her children: Janet (Kent) Ziebell of Ames, Bill (Vicki) Gelhaus of North Liberty, Dennis (Dawn) Gelhaus of Hubbard, and son-in-law Fred Witmer of Altoona. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Carrie (Nathan) DeHerrera, Stephanie (Yancey) Dautremont, Brian (Kit) Ziebell, Donna (Eric) Cook, Chris Gelhaus, Bradley (Angie) Ziebell, Christy (Jay) Menke, Michael (Sam) Witmer, and Brodi (Justin) Klaver as well as great-grandchildren: Grace, Noah, Kayla, Alexandria, Mateah, Mason, Margo, Kyle, Gavin, Anna, Rebecca, Rowan, and Thomas; two step-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-granddaughter. Also surviving are her sister Darlene Buck, and brothers Robert Zahnd and Richard (Marilee) Zahnd.
Preceeding Margaret in death are her husband of 62 years, Gilbert who died in 2010, her daughter Evelyn Witmer who died in 2019, her parents, infant son Gary, grandsons Brandon Gelhaus and Matthew Witmer, sister and husband Doris and Darwin Pfantz, brother and wife John and Odena Zahnd, and brother-in-law Paul Buck.
