Obituary for Orlen Irving Stolee

Orlen Stolee, age 81, of Radcliffe, IA, died on Monday, June 22, 2020 at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, IA from an extensive four year battle and complications of cancer.

Orlen Irving Stolee was born on September 20, 1938 at his home near Radcliffe, Iowa. He was the oldest of three boys born to Sherman and Burdene (Knutson) Stolee.

He received his education by attending country school and graduating from Radcliffe High School with the class of 1957.

On July 12, 1958, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Tysdahl at Stavanger Church in Garden City, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Wes, Shirlee, and Jon.

Orlen was a farmer and livestock producer. He raised and showed Appaloosa and POA horses. He showed them in various states. He had many National and World Champions as well as a Canadian National Champion. He took great pride in his animals and was truly a horse lover, always putting his horses before himself.

In addition to farming, Orlen was employed at Eldora Livestock Sales as a cattle buyer for many years. He was a ring man for the National Pony Sales in Eldora. In his later years he was employed at MBS.

Orlen was a 4-H leader for many years. He served on several boards as the Midwest Appaloosa Association and as a director of the POA Club. He helped organize the POA Breeders Challenge Futurity.

He was a member of Stavanger Church in Garden City. Orlen loved his family and especially enjoyed his grandchildren.

He passed away on Monday, June 22, 2020 at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa.

Surviving family includes his wife Beth of 62 years of Radcliffe, Iowa; children Wes (Aida) of Radcliffe, Iowa, Shirlee (Todd) Hasstedt of Ankeny, Iowa and Jon (Amanda) of Burleson, Texas; grandchildren Ashlee (Lee) Berry of Seattle, Washington, Clint Drake of Huntsville, Alabama and Zailey Stolee of Burleson, Texas; great-granddaughter Elizabeth Berry of Seattle, Washington; brothers Marc (Pam) Stolee and Tom (Deb) Stolee all of Radcliffe, Iowa; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Orlen was preceded in death by his parents.
